Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.

Reality these days is marred by tragedy. Social feeds of bloodshed and hate-mongering flutter briskly across our eyelids, and the evening news is nothing more than static. It’s a state of mayhem, and we may never completely escape it. Tucson, Arizona alt-pop duo Alien Atmosphere encourage you, no, beg you to fall into their dreamy soundscape and allow its layers to wash over your skin and dip your brain in a medicating cleanser. “Sail away with me / Into the sunset / We will be free,” frontman Nick Kwilosz sings, swinging from vines of early ’00s pop-rock confection. The melody is as sugary as it is profoundly vital, and as the summer waxes hot and strong, we perhaps need this rendezvous more than we first realized.

Nick is joined by his identical twin Matt, whose adeptness at the drum kit mimics a heart’s palpitating adrenaline rush. The thrill of adventure courses in their bones as much as the production itself, gliding down the highway at 100 m.p.h. and leaving their worries in the rearview mirror. Problems of the world, both micro and macro, are tenderly tucked away into glossy pop production, yet the emotion is ripe in Nick’s voice. He bubbles up and out of his falsetto with stunning ease, and you soon become hypnotize by his routine. “We will be free,” he coos in the final frame, his voice vanishing as quickly as it began, an act to finally alleviate all the pressure building in his skull.

Rooted with quite a musical lineage ⏤ their grandfather is Lloyd Conger, a blues and country player who emerged amidst the Outlaw Movement of the ’70s ⏤ the pop upstarts employ evocative storytelling in their particular strand of pop, puncturing the human existence with a bit of necessary vitality and charm. On releasing their debut song, they share,  “We wrote a song about escaping reality, but the experience of being able to finally share it with our fans is something we’d never want to escape. ‘Sail Away’ means a lot to myself and Matt, and we’re just hoping our fans are able to connect with it on a similar level.”

“Sail Away” will assuredly whet your appetite for what’s to come.
