Dance-pop music has been a vital vehicle of catharsis and escape over the last year. Long gone are the days of night clubs and concerts, temporarily, I suppose, and so we have collectively turned to intensely bouncy music to get us by. With his debut single, Ty Cassutt (going by Almost Barely) lingers on one of the last night’s out pre-pandemic with “Almost Barely,” a guitar-hook pop track of deep longing. The beat runs hot and wild, and Cassutt’s vocal seems to temper it with an icy edge. “Just for tonight, we’ll pretend that nobody’s watching on the dance floor,” he sings. It is wistful with a hearty punch.
