We always lie to ourselves, especially in relationships. We build up this hallucination in our heads, even if it comes in subtle drops, and when reality hits, we’re completely taken aback. Electro-pop producer and songwriter Stark wanders through a haze of such an illusionary experience with a song called “Cigarettes,” a collaboration with Captain Backfire. Electric guitars flood the mix, shifting it into a total genre-blurring explosion. “I waited all night / I left on the light / Are you coming home?” the pleas ring like an alarm, almost penetrating. An emotional core pounds the sense, and the production is totally enrapturing.
