Taste Test: Anna Vogelzang melts like ‘Icarus’
The indie-folk storyteller explores self-acceptance on her new Greek-themed song.

We can learn a great deal from Greek mythological pillar Icarus. As he looks to the heavens, the horizon sweeping out away from him, his naivety certainly gets the better of him. But even so, there’s a lesson in chasing down your ambitions that perhaps teases a far more enlightening tale. Boston indie-folk architect Anna Vogelzang questions her place among the swirling orbs over her head. The aptly-titled “Icarus” jostles self-acceptance with her budding musicianship in an ever-evolving industry. “Flew so close to the sun that I could almost touch it / Didn’t end up among the stars / But now, who knows if I even wanted it,” she sings. Her quaking warble bounces in time with the metallic jingle-jangle of piano and handshakers. As soon as the song cracks and opens up, she does, indeed, sprout a pair of fluffy feathered wings ready to soar further than she thought possible.
“Icarus” samples her upcoming album, Beacon, out everywhere October 4.
