Life is a scrapbook. We take polaroids, and given the fleeting nature of existence, we’ve just plastered our latest collection into fresh pages before the camera flashes and blinds us all over again. That’s just how it is. Feeling the urgency of a past relationship, rough edges cut with rusted scissors, lo-fi art-rock craftsman Best Mann (real name Nate Mondschein) flicks through a smorgasbord of photographs that somehow cobble together into a vast, electric portrait, almost pointillism in design. “MCO” veers across an off-kilter soundscape, his raw, unnerved emotions in stark proportion to the reality that stands as clear as day before him. “Think I went overboard now,” he sings. His musings, decorated through grainy filters, are best served scalding hot, and as such, his performance is undeniable.
“MCO” anchors Best Mann’s new album, …And the Sky, out everywhere October 25.
