They say if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. That’s a fact. We’re seeing it plain as day right now. Folk-pop six-piece Carmanah ⏤ of Laura Mina Mitic, Pat Ferguson, Mikey Baker, Lo Waight, Graham Keehn, and Jamil Demers ⏤ cook up their own version of such an old adage with their deceivingly, and charmingly, light and fluffy new tune. “Stand Up” contrasts a very heavenly production style, accentuated with some angelic, soothing harmony work, and incisor-cut lyrics. “As long as you stand for something, we’ll be proud / Unless you stand for hate… then sit your ass back down,” Mitic coos in the final frame. In flipping the switch from diffidence to brashness, it encompasses the very juxtaposition of today’s passivity and tomorrow’s assertiveness. We all should be doing far more of the latter.
