Taste Test: Cavetown combs deeper layers of ‘Home’

The folk-pop YouTuber charms with a pop-up storybook visual illustrating his struggle with anxiety.

Working through anxiety is a treacherous evolution. It takes nothing but time. Even then, the journey is arduous and you may never fully step out into the light. YouTube sensation, a craftsman of folk-pop compositions and covers, Cavetown (real name Robin Skinner) revisits his song “This is Home,” originally released four years ago, for a more mature reworking. Now called “Home,” containing sweltering string work that expands to fill the space entirely, the heart-tucking ballad sees him confront his demons via pop-up storybook. The visual is both childlike, borrowing from his boyish charm, and adult, as he weaves through various stages of existence to figure out himself and his hellish mental state. “Get a load of this monster / He doesn’t know how to communicate / His mind is in a different place / Will everybody please give him a little bit of space,” he sings. Anxiety is his trollish, blood-sucking fiend, who Skinner may have finally slain once and for all. At least, he’s more capable of coping.
