Toward the end of her grandfather’s life, Cf Watkins once visited him in the hospital, and he didn’t even recognize her. Stricken with dementia, he thought Watkins was his dearly departed named Frances. “Frances, I should have loved you more,” he uttered, gripping Watkins’ hand. Such a powerful reminder of life’s fleeting nature becomes the bedrock of the singer-songwriter’s new entry. Aptly-titled “Frances,” the moving ballad memorializes not only her grandmother but her grandfather’s unwavering love for her til the very end. “I don’t wanna have to wait for you no more,” Watkins sings. She dons a narrator role, stepping into her grandfather’s shoes to tell a timeless story of love, life, and death. (We’re not crying; you’re crying…)
“Frances” samples Watkins’ new album, Babygirl, slated for October 16.
