Pressures to conform is as steam in a scalding cauldron. Women, especially, are left to choke and scavenge for scraps. Austin indie-rock newcomer Christine Renner plants her flag, quite defiantly, amidst a disheveled music scene with a brashly fuzzy new song. With “Decency,” she works through both an identity crises and a breakup, a scratching static murmuring in the background. “I’m stuck / It’s so hard,” her chest nearly collapses, but her voice continues in feathered ripples. “I am an alien to this world / I weigh the difference / I just don’t fit in / I’m not just another typical American girl,” she sings. It’s a muted vocal performance but one that clings to the ear lobes and will never let go.
“Decency” samples Renner’s new EP, Tonight, out everywhere now.
