It hurts like hell when you lose someone. You can never be ready for it. But life is littered with tragedy, heavy loss, and unimaginable grief. Americana singer-songwriter Clancy Pye roots her new song “Heaven Can’t Wait” right in the eye of a torrential downpour, one so severe and relentless it may never stop. “I guess heaven can’t wait for people like that / God takes ’em in and don’t send ’em back,” she weeps. Her soul is exhausted, displayed through her heavy vocal take, as she details various stories of brutally unexpected loss. “What a shame,” she later sighs. Pye’s lyrics adorn a steady, Mary Chapin Carpenter rhythm, and her voice flutters, almost soothing. She fashions the pain as a storytelling mechanism that eventually blossoms into healing. Time really is the only solvent; oh, and songs like this.

“Heaven Can’t Wait” samples Pye’s debut EP, expected this September.
