Taste Test: Common Jack admits to his many flaws with new song, ‘Fresh’
The folk performer seeks for unconditional love.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Common Jack has a way of medicating the heart with his work. “Fresh” is no exception. As he seeks to love someone, unconditionally, he makes way for a lilting, all-enveloping performance. “I gotta be honest / I’m prone to making promises / That I can never keep,” he admits from the start. “I’m a little bit too much / Like a character in a musical / Who is dying but still sings.” He embroiders the edges with some (very dark) levity, a way to puncture the tension from the air around him. He later confides, pulling you closer, on his unavoidable human flaws, “I’m not fresh / I’m not clean / I come totally undone once a week.” Acoustic guitar trickles as a water fountain is likely to do, and his voice never wavers, alway reliably wrapping you in warmth.
“Fresh” is a sampler to his forthcoming new EP, Lake Song, arriving this fall.
