The Singles Bar: County Line Runner urges for redemption on ‘Hard to Find’
Adam Day explores vast uncertainty in a new mid-tempo slow-burn.
Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.
We humans feel things in our soul. Even paper-cut-thin splices to emotion tear through our core like a bolt of lightning. Adam Day knows all too well what that feels and looks like. He’s hit that fork in the road more than once, or perhaps observed with unsettling earnestness, and with “Hard to Find,” which is indie-rock in all its vivacious spades, feathered out and up the skin, sees the former Lyrebirds frontman whisking away down the wheat-blazoned fields and lifting his feet off the ground. A gloriously brisk and sunny excursion, the song is tempered with cinematic synergy, as it also remains rattling inside his ribcage. His heart pounds, and you’ve never been closer to him.
The strings scrape at the earth’s flaky surface, and his voice hurts with an indescribable ache. “[The song] is about talking someone around ⎯⎯ when there seems no way forward,” said Day, who goes by County Line Runner these days (a collaboration with long-time friend Sam Baldwin). “They’ve hit that turning point in the road. It’s when they’re forced to go in a different direction…”
Those kinds of moments, we all experience them differently and at various points in our life. We might be a bright-eyed, naive 21-year-old who has the entire scope of existence soaring up from their legs ahead of them…or perhaps they’re a grey-haired 65-year-old widow whose last days hang like whooping-cough on their lungs, reaching deep within their skeletons and excavating flecks of white. Regardless of such fates, Day’s voice soothes and envelopes and evokes firmly-rooted wisdom. “When you’re feeling too soon to run / And you don’t think you can quit / And you’ve untangled all of your thoughts,” he sings, gently wrapping his sweet, caramel tenor around the melody. “And you still don’t make sense of it / When you’re hurting the ones you love best, and nothing is getting through / Would you say or do those things if they were somebody new?”
“Hard to Find” is as sublime as it is gutting to the insides.
