An abrupt, totally unexpected, end of a relationship is as a cigarette burning out. The ash fills your lungs, suffocating you, and you’re only left with a string of solitary thoughts. So is the way of Dance Yourself Clean‘s debut single, interchanging the pain with a full-body wash in synths and percussion. “Waste My Time,” a collaboration with The Fame Riot, fizzes in crisp waves, an effervescent drink sloshing around a broken, hollowed-out heart. “If you wanna waste my time, the secret’s in my heartbeat, baby,” sings Seattle’s Shazzam Watkins, a voice oozing both ice and fire. The volatile mix trails through various other emotions, as well, from jaw-clenched anger to the longing for what could be. In either state, Dance Yourself Clean allow the sentiments to ebb and flow in a jaunty production style that never drowns out the raw potency.
