Taste Test: EBEN weeps and wails for ‘Plastic Angels’
The pop upstart juggles a love-hate relationship with LA on his new song.

Los Angeles continues to feed off fumes of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The era of Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando evokes a certain glitz and glamour that is forever stitched onto the fabric of the City of Angels. Yet pop upstart EBEN feels a love-hate tug at his emotional strings with his new song. “Plastic Angels” both laments the facades behind which most hide and glorifies the rush of riding down Hollywood Boulevard, a cityscape shimmering whatever time of day it may be. “Stuck at a party with people I don’t know / California lonely paradise / Fuck!” he sings. The beat throbs with adrenaline, but the vocal distortion deceives his joyous inflections, which soon fall under a dark cloud of melancholy, too. In jubilantly embracing current mainstream styles, he works up a sweat in the juxtaposition of mass appeal while puncturing the bubble.
