Isolation claws at your skin, tearing away bits of flesh down to bare bone. That’s what 2020 has felt like, at least. Indie-pop duo Eighty Ninety, of brothers Abner and Harper, toss and turn between sheets of acoustic guitar and a pitter-patter backbeat. “Happier” is right out of Taylor Swift‘s playbook, which is probably why the song is signed, sealed, and delivered on one of her playlists. Yet the siblings leave their own idelible imprint, as Abner’s vocals flutter light as a feather. “We can say goodnight when the morning comes,” he sings, nearly breathless. As we enter autumn, the pandemic still clutching to our way of life, perhaps such an entry can soothe us all. “I hope it’s better somehow / I know that it ain’t easy so far…”
