Emily Kinney is “soaked in sorry,” as she emerges from a pool of regret and shame. With “False Start,” the singer-songwriter flips through reality in an attempt to understand how a relationship failed to hit into overdrive. “How can I tell what’s real or fake / How much more can I take of this war inside of me / Kind of hope I quit dreaming entirely,” she laments. Its dreamy ambiance punctures the dreary emotional downpour. As always her case, Kinney has a way of songwriting that’s plain yet poetic in the same breath. And “False Start” is no exception.
