Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

The outlaw country movement evokes a sense of lawlessness and rebellion. Willie Nelson and others reconfigured traditional storytelling in ways that turned the industry inside out. Philadelphia rabble rouser Emmett Drueding dresses up as a booze hound whose sloshy late-night binges sprout from a deeply-troubled past and growling inner turmoil. “Drunk Whiskey Boy” stumbles across the dusty barroom, the amber lights further blurring sense of reality and truth, and Drueding’s voice, at times rugged and scorched, lugs the listener through realizations about arresting fears and anxiety. “I am on my way to a dirty place!” he scowls, the alcohol hanging on his breath in foggy bursts. He might be playing a character, one we’ve all probably encountered sooner or later, but his conviction is as ripe as grapes on a vine ready for harvest.

“Drunk Whiskey Boy” anchors Drueding’s new album, Tightrope Walker, expected later this year.
