Taste Test: ‘Run’ by Everdeen is a stripped down heart-cry
These German-based indie artists show that less is sometimes more
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Songs are an outpouring of the heart, pure emotion distilled into musical form. “Run” is a striking example of one such song, with every line and lyric hitting the listener squarely in the chest. The indie-pop group Everdeen is usually a four-piece rock band, but for “Run”, there are only two musicians. Ian Stahl provides the main backing as the pianist, and Sümeyra Dogan plays the electric guitar. But even these instruments are minimalistic, allowing Dogan’s voice to take centre stage. Her vocal range is stunning, hitting high notes effortlessly and enthralling the listener in the emotion of the lyrics. “And you fall down into the deepest hole/And you’re crawling from underneath this heavy load/And you run”. This song is both full and heavy, and it captures an emotion that can never be truly put into words. Truly beautiful.
