Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

At first glance, Jordan Michelle’s song “Tear Me Down” is another punk-inspired electro-pop song, expertly melding distorted guitars, electronics and cathartic beat drops. It has an unrelenting undercurrent of power and attitude that runs through the bass like a strip of iron. But although the American artist heavily leans into the punk genre stereotypes, this single also has a valuable lesson to teach. “Even though fire might burn you/if you put it out then it won’t light your way/temporary infernos/just might be your saving grace”. “Tear Me Down” ultimately is not about blaming others or being better than anyone else, it is a call to action. It is a call to use the fires of life to refine yourself and to overcome your challenges. This ethos of self-improvement and optimism gives Michelle’s vocals an edge of raw power and depth to her voice as she belts out hope in lyrical form. Michelle quotes her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor who inspired this attitude: “Optimism in the face of adversity will always lead to the greatest outcome.”
