Cam has a voice that rolls down from the mountains. It’s as clear as a creek, whose crystalline surface gurgles and bubbles between moss-gilded stones, and nearly soars as high as Patsy Cline (evidence here). Now, she reemerges with a country-tinted cover of Christine & the Queens‘ “La Marcheuse,” and it is as heavenly as you could possible anticipate. Cam brandishes her instrument as a forever-burning torch in the black of night. It’s within pages of such vulnerability and nuance that she shines the brightest.

North Carolina band Mad Crush drag themselves across the coals with the humorously giddy tale called “(Imagine the Girlfriends I’d Have) If I Still Had Hair.” Frontman John Elderkin rides a high of his own making, and his wordplay weaves across a trusty tapestry of down-home guitar pluckin’ on the front porch while sittin’ ‘n watchin’ the sun punch the horizon. “I’ve searched all the reasons I’m still all alone,” he laps up his tears ⏤ not in mourning but full-steam of jest. His daring to poke fun is infectious, plump and ripe for the pickin’.
