Control. We all want to control over most things in our lives. But once you’re lovestruck, there then comes a level of reconfiguring expectations. Control becomes something of a compromise, if you will. Folksy Brooklyn singer-songwriter Peter Wise finds the push and pull so potent it pours out onto his new recording. “Trustfall” inhabits that space between wanting to hold on and finally learning to let go. “What if no one’s waiting at all?” he prompts, the tangle suffocating and forcing him to question what it all means exactly. Wise’s voice operates as both a sweet love letter and a blaring, unapologetic caution sign.

One of pop’s most promising fire-starters Benedict Cork goes for a heartfelt sucker punch of vulnerability. “Boys Don’t Cry,” the closing, piano-burner on his new EP, Letters to Strangers, out now, melts the pain off his skin. The tears have imprinted on his cheeks, no matter how much he wishes (or sings) the pain away, in rainbow-coated shadows. But that’s the point. He’s singing about holding back, yet here he is letting it all flow out of him. Bruises heal, but true healing only comes with time. “Why did I think it was easier to hide?” he sings, his voice curling into his falsetto. Simply: it’s an outstanding performance.
