Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.
Miranda Lambert is a songwriting force. Her new album Wildcard drowns the body in genre-pushing styles and offers up some of her most biting lyrics to-date. “Holy Water” floods with gospel ripples and a cathedral-sized backing choir, as strings spin an earthy, dusty front-porch yarn behind her. “They’re sellin’ snake oil from the pulpit at the church on Main / They’re makin’ deals with the Devil in the good Lord’s name,” she sings, a callout of much of institutional religion and its hypocrisy. She continues letting her words be known: “I’m stuck at home missin’ a dirty soul cleansin’ / Ain’t got a dime for the tithe / I believe amusing personal communion can lead you right to the light.” It’s the kind of redemptive baptismal we all could use just a little bit right ’bout now.
Judy Blank makes her mark with her brand new EP, Morning After, coming on the heels of her AmericanaFest debut and the stateside release of Morning Sun. Her voice is most intoxicating on “What It Is,” a slowly galloping barn scooter. “It’s so much better in my mind,” she hollers, a chorus of like-minded rabble-rousers coming to her aid. It’s a sweetly starlit performance, meandering from countrypolitan and the Nashville Sound, and extracting a certain ’90s sparkle. Blank is poised to dominate 2020, you in?
The new lineup also includes The Sweeplings, Graveyard Guy, Alex Weeden, Francine Honey, Ron Pope, KTJ & Carly, Karmic, Stefan Alexander, Julian Daniel, The Darcys, Carl Anderson, Jonathan Something, Erin Enderlin, Bobby Hawk, Motherfolk, Dua Lipa, Emily Burns and many others.
