Freshly Squeezed, Vol. 68: Devin Kennedy, Fly By Midnight, Granville Automatic & more

Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.

You won’t feel the same after you spin Devin Kennedy‘s brand new single. “Feel the Same” bubbles in soapy swirls and continues to confirm he’s one of the most promising pop newcomers on the scene. The chewy pop track follows on the heels of other excellent ear-worms as “Body” and “Bad Habit,” and in adhering to common stylistic touchpoints across all his work, Kennedy masterfully competes with many current mainstream heavyweights without an ounce of compromise. He zigs and zags between the layers of pop and R&B-marked grooves with wondrous ease. “I don’t want to lose you / Lose you in the rearview,” he expends on the first verse.

Electro-pop purveyor Brett Cameron refuses to make a single mistake. “Diamonds” dazzles with scratchy bass and gurgling synths, his voice riding on the crest that lingers on the cheeks. The percussion stomps hard, and the melody grows sticky like bubblegum popping in the air. Meanwhile, Riley Clemmons gets us in the holiday spirit with a double-dose of candy cane magic with versions of such Christmas classics as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Silent Night,” both frosty to the touch.

Fly by Midnight lay it on thick with “You Belong,” the lead single to their new album, Rerunning (out Nov. 16). As they succumb to a love-torn arrow, falling under someone else’s spell, they must learn to let it all go. “Ride or die with me / Yeah, push the past to the side, baby,” they sing, a storm of production raging from their fingertips. They attempt to wrangle their emotions, but as they drift further and further away into a fiery billowing of smoke, their love dwindles until there’s nothing left but regret.
