Freshly Squeezed, Vol. 67: Jamie Lin Wilson, Dominique Pruitt, UNBLOOM & more

It’s been two very long years since Jamie Lin Wilson‘s last studio record, the excellent Holidays & Wedding Rings from 2016. But here we are. Wilson’s brand new, just-pressed follow-up, Jumping Over Rocks, continues stretching her songwriting and vocalist skills but adhering to a craft that makes her so tremendously unique. “Instant Coffee Blues,” featuring Jack Ingram, a quite outstanding musical partner, is a sorrowful cover of the Guy Clark original. Wilson is a masterclass storyteller, and you feel the brunt of emptiness of fading love. Making the classic song a duet is an inspired artistic decision, but you haven’t seen anything yet. Jumping Over Rocks carries with it ever shade of misery this world has to offer, painting a rich snapshot of American life, the struggles, the pain, the heartache. Don’t go another day without Wilson as your guide.

Fox and Bones unearth the sands of time with the dreamy “Roads,” a cut from their latest record, Better Land. It pounds recklessly from the inside out, from the obvious quakes of percussion to the swelling and popping of strings. Sarah Vitort and Scott Gilmore intertwine and tear apart, their voices lingering on the silvering edges of the melody and carrying the listener right along the dusty highway with them.

Dominique Pruitt lights up our playlist with a starry countrypolitan piece called “High in the Valley.” It’s a little bit Nancy Sinatra, with a Dolly Parton flicker. It’s a heavenly strip of music that worms through the noise of today’s music scene, and it’s a wonder where she’s been all this time. “Valley” is Pruitt’s first bit of music since her 2013 studio record, the To Win Your Love EP.
