Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.
Searing pop upstart Gabriella Rose strikes profound melancholy with her new single “Requiem,” an existential slice of dread as she wrangles her emotions over her grandmother’s death. Her voice calls from beyond a swirling black abyss, and she uproots her pain, mangled endings and all, with gutting determination. Acoustic guitar and piano aid her in her journey, rising out of the smoke and fire to regain her footing amidst such catastrophe, but as her wounds have long healed, she now looks back fondly, tears only misting her eyes like a garden sprinkle set on low. “I’m so heart-sick for a place that don’t exist,” she sings in a dream-like trance.
Simon Lunche‘s voice is baked between a rich stack of guitar. “Cheery Wine,” a neck-nuzzle of intimacy, skin-soft and flaky, flows down the eardrums, replenishing the well of romance. He’s a dazzling crooner, bringing his listeners to his knees in much the same way as Justin Timberlake but with a penchant for stinging guitars. He sweeps you off your foot and across the ballroom floor. The candlelight casts an ethereal outline around the lovers’ embrace, and even their breath moves in time with the steady waltz tempo. It’s never a “hopeless plight” as long as Lunche wrestles you into his arms.
Nashville’s Kassi Ashton spouts off at her exes with her new low-riding kiss-off “Violins,” hard on the groove, guitars and grit. “I can’t hear the violins you’re playing / There’s no symphony inside my head,” she smirks, relishing her in her independence. She upends the post-heartbreak tribute with a hardened heart and a new-found liberation. That’s not to say she doesn’t feel anything, she’s just done with the bullshit. She then spits: “I got my own marching band / Guess I lost my give-a-damn.” Hallelujah, amen.
The playlist also includes: Cam Monroe, Caroline Lazar, Jaymay, Born Stranger, Cold Bath, Mindy Gledhill, slenderbodies, Hannie, Beekwilder, Eli Lev, Lauv, Ilana Armida, Fletcher, Cherryade and countless others.
In all, we’ve got 50 new songs to bop along to as you ready for the impending three-day weekend. Leggo and let music.
