Freshly Squeezed, Vol. 78: Caroline Spence, Maggie Rogers, Royal South & more

Enjoy new songs from Maren Morris, Call Me Loop, Emma Charles, Sam Setton, Stepsons and more!

Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.

It’s been nearly two years since Caroline Spence‘s excellent and criminally undervalued Spades and Roses record. Today, she blesses the senses with a double-dose of singles to prime us for what will assuredly be one of 2019’s best albums (we like to predict such things ’round these parts). “Long Haul” is a gentle weeper, lush and of the earth and harkening to such rich storytellers as Keith Whitley and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Spence’s voice falls like a warm spring rain, washing away the self-sabotage that plagues her and offering up compassion to her fellow working musicians.”I keep breaking everything I’m fixing,” she sputters. But don’t fret Spence, we are paying attention, and you’re fixing everything.

We’ve been waiting for what feels like eons for Maggie Roger‘s debut long-player. But here we are, basking in the glory that is Heard It in a Past Life. If it were fair, this week’s lineup would be this entire record on loop. But that’s not fair. The essential cut “Say It” bounces on the heartstrings while enticing us to grind on the dance floor. It’s the last shot at last call. It’s the open breeze flushing our cheeks on the rooftop of some deep Brooklyn high rise. It’s the sweet tang of sunrise, pink and orange starbursts piercing our eyes like a psychedelic prism. We’ve never felt more alive than we have right here in this moment, clutching Rogers’ new album tight to our chest.

Maren Morris flexes her platform with an imperative new rallying cry called “Girl,” which seeks to display the plight of being a woman and wrestling with her own self-doubt. “Girl, won’t you stop your crying / I know that you’re trying / Everything’s going to be OK,” she urges, wiping away the razor-sharp teardrops. Despite an industry built against women, Morris won’t take the punches laying down; she simply patches herself up and returns the favor.

The new playlist also includes such essentials as: Bella Rios, Kolya, Caylee Hammack, Emma Charles, Molly Tuttle, Stepsons, Sam Setton, Call Me Loop, Isla June, Terror JR and countless more.

In all, we’ve got 50 new songs to bop along to as you ready for the impending three-day weekend. Leggo and let music.

Each playlist will be refreshed every Friday morning/afternoon. We reserve the right to update anytime during the week, so make sure you bookmark this page.

  1. Thank you so much for including Justin Fabus in your playlist! He is an amazingly talented singer/songwriter, who sings from his heart always, and deserves nothing but the best!
