On the surface of it, Gio Bermejo’s latest single is a happy song, full of joyful saxophone, major chords and an upbeat backing choir. The song is high-energy, positive and with a beat that makes you want to dance along with the rhythm. Even the music video features wide smiles, tall bottles and ostentatious outfits. But peer a little closer, and the extravagant necklaces are chains around Bermejo’s neck, and the smile never quite reaches his eyes. The lyrics betray the bittersweet emotion behind this upbeat single. “I feel like a lost my best friend/maybe I don’t have a soulmate/who’s gonna stand someone like me/obsessed with music and hurt this deep.” This song is a beautiful, carefully balanced mix of joy and sadness.
