There’s nothing ordinary about love. Even long after the honeymoon phase was dissipated, leaving jarring mundanity, the very nature of blissful passion rises to the surface and gives birth to its most true condition. It can be exhilarating. Indie-pop duo Grayshot give it all they’ve got with their new song “Ordinary Love,” a glossy power anthem that illuminates from the inside out. “Settle in, hold tight / It’s gonna be a long night of trying,” sings Aaron Ankrum in a dauntless declaration right from the start. Alongside his brother Christian Ankrum (on bass, keys and harmony), the mischievous Minneapolis match, who have landed placements in network TV shows and documentaries via MTV, FOX and others, study the various stages of love, also considering those times a flame flickers out and how its rekindled anew.

Premiering today, the accompanying lyric video bathes in bubble-bursting Tumblr aesthetics and morphs between hovering heart-shaped word clouds and dangling sentence diagrams. Aaron’s voice pokes into the production like a dart into cork board, the feathered tail flapping in the air and tickling the cheekbones. “This is an ordinary love, the kind that brings you to your knees / And everything outside doesn’t matter,” Aaron sputters just before the arena-sized boom that shatters glass and hurtles full-force into the cosmos. In washing their hearts in the foamy sea, they are refreshed with such thrilling dalliances that is then mirrored in the arrangement, from babbling synths to rock-fused, sky-scratching guitar.

“‘Ordinary Love’ was important to this record from the very beginning, even before I realized what I was saying,” Aaron tells B-Sides & Badlands of the song, which possesses an unexpectedly triumphant electronica outro. “It was around from almost the beginning of the album process and kept evolving and surprising us until it landed in it’s final form. It provided a lot of momentum to the other songs along the way.”

“Ordinary Love” is the second single from the duo’s new album, Surface, out February 1.
