You shouldn’t walk home alone, especially if you’re a woman. It’s the sad state of things. An illogical, perverse hatred of women has bred an environment of sexual assault – a web from which we can’t escape. Stepping out for a solo career, Hayley Mary (of The Jezabels) makes a bold, enrapturing declaration with her new song/video for “Like a Woman Should,” in which she so desperately longs for a day when she can walk home alone and feel safe. “I was a lady, and you were a streetlight in the cold / And if you could save me from my body, I’ll wonder what you do with my soul,” she sings into her silky head voice. She then turns her attention to the birth of her daughters and every woman who’ll come after her – lamenting if enough progress will be made to save them from such a terribly ill fate. The visual, directed by Tyson Perkins, is a celebration of that hope, as she wanders through the midnight hour-filtered streets – both sorrow and joy inform the performance and style, retro and resoundingly sobering.
“Like a Woman Should” samples Mary’s new solo EP, The Piss, The Perfume, coming out this Friday (January 17).
