Taste Test: HOAX spiral down into an ‘unconditional’ romance

The transition from simply caring for someone to the unconditional kind is distinct. There’s always before, and there’s always after. It’s a journey, that’s to be sure, and it’s also navigating intense observation and consideration to accept imperfections – jagged edges and all. Indie-pop band and B-Sides & Badlands mainstay HOAX wander through love’s hallowed halls as they come to terms with implications of falling head over heels. “unconditional” is icy to the touch, a smooth cocktail with enough electric spice to get the senses tingling. “We might never know / Feeling so cold,” wafts from their lips, synth clouds emerging around them. By the final few frames, their voices descend into a deep slumber, and the magnetic dream state as potent as the next.
“unconditional” samples the band’s new album, b?, expected everywhere in 2020.
