Sexual identity means something different in the digital world – or at least the journey to and through it. From countless filters to Instagram models, it’s hard to tell what is even real anymore. Alt-rock drifter Holden Laurence plays narrator and combs such emotional currency into his new song called “Rock the Cradle.” Barbs on his tongue, and a fuzzy electric guitar in tow, he stages a tragic storybook that embodies the nature of living in 2019. “Pretty eyes and a low self-esteem / A need for love and a white pill between her knees,” he sings, a sorrowful tear soaks every syllable, his own lonesome heart split down the middle. Laurence’s poetic simplicity, in both lyric and vocal approach, nails the theme right into the earth – it’s a vital performance of this very moment.
“Rock the Cradle” samples Laurence’s sophomore album, Rewire, expected in 2020.
