Taste Test: Hugh & Amaroun are finally ‘Sober’
An English collective muse on a relationship’s dying out and the ultimate freedom with their comeback song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
There’s a reason comparisons between the buzz of a relationship and drugs exist. The high and eventual bottoming-out feel much the same. Once effects of detox set in, like clammy hands, shivers and possible hallucinations, clarity descends upon your shoulders, too. England collective Hugh ⏤ billed as Andy Highmore, Joshua Idehen, Martin Kolarides and friends ⏤ flex and sweat under such a microscope, squirming away from a once-toxic headspace and back into fresh air. “Sober,” featuring vocalist Amaroun, whose warmth envelopes you, full-stop, works as a moment of liberation and rebirth. “I’ve been drunk over you / But I’m sober now,” the hook wafts as smoke out of ash, an aroma flaring the nostrils. The past collapses under the weight of synths and caramel stickiness, a guiding light through life’s most tumultuous weather patterns. Dig in, and find yourself.
“Sober” is Hugh’s first single after a year-long hiatus.
