Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

There’s that kind of lovesickness that makes you fall to your knees. You just can’t help it. Sweat glistens across your forehead; your hands grow clammy and flush red; and you may even stutter on your words. It’s that kind of love ⏤ not exclusive to romantic rendezvouses, of course. Ever the consummate traveling musician, both blessed and cursed by the open road, Santa Cruz folk-smith Joe Kaplow witnesses every ounce of that love swelling behind his ribs. On “Mavourneen,” which is drawn from the Irish Gaelic term meaning “my beloved,” the reedy-voiced wanderer steps back for a moment of reflection, tambourine tinging like a jovial baton leader prancing down the street. “I don’t wanna be just another somebody,” slips from his lips. Kaplow is both flummoxed by an ever-slippery industry and invigorated by the lifestyle that only gets more grueling to survive. But he rises as a beacon here, his voice carrying with it the wisdom of the whole damn world.

“Mavourneen” bookends Kaplow’s new album, Time Spent in Between, out everywhere now.
