Taste Test: Idle Joy ignore what their ‘Neighbors’ have to say
The indie-rock band let loose with a new song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
By nature, we take things far too seriously ⏤ and the pressure to even can about what others think is unbearable. Indie-rock three-piece Idle Joy ⏤ of Tom Conneely, Steve Jaeger, and Alex Coltharp ⏤ barrel right through the muck and the mud to have a little fun. A country-tinged standard, “Neighbors” lets loose with a healthy dose of scorching electric guitar, laced with raucous drums and Conneely’s serpent-lapping snarl, and their glowing energy is downright infectious. “The landlord told me to cut my hair / I wonder who is right,” snaps Conneely. His words are poison darts, but he shoots them out with a wry smile. It’s all about letting all the toxicity slide right off the skin; we should all take a few notes.
“Neighbors” samples the band’s new album, Your Stars, out everywhere April 10.
