Such horror classics as Nightmare on Elm Street and The Lost Boys have broken cold cemetery earth for not only filmmaking but the musical sub-genre of horror-pop. San Diego noise-maker JARA‘s entire aesthetic is drenched in blood-soaked mania, circling his storytelling craft with throat-sucking, full-throttle synths and unnerving, yet faint, screams. With “Don’t Drop the Funk,” just in time for Halloween’s evil haunt, he winds through an electric guitar-hinged, candlelit gothic mansion and even unearths a “Thriller” upheaval that is downright exhilarating. “Please don’t drop the funk,” he spins his vocal as gnarly cracked vinyl, even offering a Katy Perry-pointed bravado. “I like the way you groove,” he later casts his crushed heart into the somber October sky. A storm is gathering on the horizon, and JARA may be your only way of survival.
