Taste Test: Desert Sparrow tap Rhys Darby to find Bigfoot in ‘Karma’ clip

The indie-rock duo enlist an acting legend for their goofy new music video.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Bigfoot is among the most well-known creatures of haunted folklore ⏤ its roots can be traced back to Native American legend. There are countless other hairy beasts of mystery, including White Thang, Skunk Ape and Mothman, but there’s something universally-appealing about the monstrously lanky brute. Kylie Adams and Dave Carreno, making up indie-rock duo Desert Sparrow, employ the mayhem and madness surrounding the unknown figure for their new video, “Karma.” Surfy guitars froth together into a misty display and give the visual, which transparently nosedives right into comedy, an even more heightened musical euphoria. The song chomps down on hard on what karma exactly means in a relationship so off-balance that it all inevitably comes to a head, sooner or later. “How far will you take this?” harps Adams. No spoilers, but the story, starring New Zealand actor Rhys Darby (Flight of the Concords), unravels with one twisty stomach punch.
