Moving on can hurt like hell. Flames char to the bone, and we still may never let go of the past. Corked with anger and resentment, indie-rock guitar-slayer Joe August charges right into the eye of the flames, licking and consuming his entire body, and yet he emerges on the other side. With “Out of the Blue,” he’s a little worse for wear, sure, but his backbone remains upright, his emotions now emblazoned on his jacket. “It’s not rock and roll if you aren’t pissed off sometimes,” he’s said of the song. He carries that gumption right in the back of his throat, allowing his inflection to be as sly as it is penetrating. “I saw through your empty eyes,” he sings. His style pins amidst classic ’70s rock, sidling somewhere between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Morrison, while also quaking with an apparent blues stride. “It looks like you’re out of luck…”
