Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Constructing a double album is a mammoth task and not one to take lightly. Just ask Miranda Lambert. Indie-rock four-piece The Pierce Project ⏤ of three Pierce brothers and their dad ⏤ pop a lid on a daring 24 pack and don’t ever sacrifice quality. Prime cut called “I Had a Girl,” a Beach Boys-drenched ode to young love and the inevitable heartbreak, is the band at their most musically charming. “I had a girl like a shiny pearl / But she just left me all by myself,” they sing, a bit bummed out and downcast. Harmonies falling like mourning dew, they also subtly shade their work in a similar vein to Wallows, a surfy rock tendency with a cool, minty haze. But their own unique imprint will assuredly stay on your mind.

“I Had a Girl” is lifted from the band’s double-decker debut LP, The Last Days of Summer, out everywhere now.
