You know, we’re meant to get our hearts broken. That’s just the nature of us. But when it happens, we’ll collapse upon the floor. We’ll scream. We’ll jab our fists into the wall. We’ll let our tears stain our cheeks bright red. And that’s okay. One of pop’s most treasured songwriters, Julia Michaels confides that she’s more than ready to let a new romantic bliss, and the possibility of pain, to strike her heart anew. “Hurt Again,” now with a raw, off-the-cuff live vocal performance, cuts deep and exposes Michaels’ nerve (and specificity) as a storyteller. “You remind me of my past / That’s how I know that this won’t last,” she sings. The drum kit pulsates like a tilt-a-whirl, and guitar scratches beneath her vocal cords. Such a confession stokes the fire in her belly, and even as the keyboard twinkles like a million stars overhead, there’s a chest-pounding weight descending upon her. Despite it all, the hurt is what has made her stronger.

“Hurt Again” is lifted from Michaels’ latest EP, Inner Monologue Part 2, out now.
