Taste Test: Kailey Prior advises that you shouldn’t ‘Assume’ anything
The Brooklyn folk player doesn’t let an “ass” make a fool out of her with a new song.

You know what they say: to assume makes an ass out of you and me. You just have to be clearheaded enough to see the truth that hangs right in front of your nose. Brooklyn folksmith Kailey Prior brandishes that notion for her appropriately-titled new song “Assume,” her reedy warble prancing out the words with sly precision. “I’m breaking the rules by telling you I’m moving on,” she sings. Seconds later, she delivers the aforementioned phrase as the song’s spitting venom as a way to break her own guilt over the situation. Prior displays exhilarating skill with her vocal cords, an electrifyingly charming yodel pursing her lips, worthy of Eddie Arnold. “Well, you’re an ass / And me? I’m gone,” she sings so nonchalantly you can’t help but chuckle. Prior crafts a thorny kiss-off that is both rooted in pain and kitschy.
“Assume” is Prior’s second single of 2019, following “Little Bird.”
