Taste Test: Kris Kelly reimagines ‘Cracked Porcelain’ as piercing acoustic

The indie-folk storyteller examines love and lust with a stunning new acoustic performance.

Complexities of existing, perhaps balancing between sacrifice and burden, enrich our everyday lives in ways we probably take for granted far too much. Where there’s misery, there’s joy. Anger, happiness. And where there’s true love, there’s lust. Both of each duality is vital. Indie-folk singer-songwriter Kris Kelly juggles such thoughts and notions with his heavenly song “Cracked Porcelain,” which has been given a second life with a solo acoustic rendition. Left to his own devices, Kelly somehow manages to excavate even more brutally emotional meanings and tendons, snapping each as his voice literally cracks and bends across the syllables. “Tonight let’s drink our love away / Tonight let’s give our love away,” his feathery whispers alight upon a mountain ridge before setting flight off onto the horizon. He allows himself a true moment of vulnerability, yet there’s considerable weight that bears down on all of our lives.
