Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.

Luca Chesney rises like a phoenix. Sun-kissed with pop splendor, somehow unlocking an emotional key of pinnacle personal transformation, the mayhem-seeking upstart steps out of her typically twisted dark fantasies for a refreshing bite of self-reliance. With her new single “Something Brand New,” a delightful reconfiguration of her aesthetic, Chesney celebrates her rebirth and escapes the unhidden and unspoken chains that had once bound her. Instead of lingering on the bitter, she lazes about in new-found beauty and life’s tangy sweetness.

“My previous work has felt like it come from an underworld. I heard a lot of the lyrics and melodies in dreams and recorded them in the morning,” she explains, referencing her tremendously overcast debut EP, Mother Electric, a smorgasbord of hallowed out alt-pop that creeps and crawls in the membrane. “There was a dark intensity to them. This new song is lighter in every way; I feel lighter in every way. It’s as if I broke the surface on something internally…”

On “Something Brand New,” she feels as alive in her skin as ever, viciously attacking the lyrics with a somehow comforting, commanding and cool clatter. “Feeling like I’m flying / You shot me down / My heart is underground,” she sputters in an attempt to wrestle the past with a sprightly presence that is quickly clipping at her heels. In the expanse of three and a half minutes, Chesney’s heart flutters with intensity, straining her emotions and permitting her to loosen her grasp on the past’s inordinate misery. “You had enough / You’re out of love / You’re giving up,” she vexes the listener with a tenderhearted covenant but the truth soon deceives the senses altogether.
