You know those pangs of sorrow that shatter through your chest after a breakup? It’s the kind of anguish you can’t escape, and the crashing of bone against skin leaves you drained and weary. When you’re alone and locked away from the world, the silence rings even louder in your eardrums; a new kind of static shocks the system. Norway folk darling Malin Pettersen wallows in “the sadness of when love or heartache can turn solitude into a very bad thing,” she says of her brittle new ballad. “Alonesome,” which crackles from both her vocal cords and acoustic guitar, juggles the ache to be alone and feeling that being alone is the worst state through which you could possibly suffer. “Ever since you left, I’ve been alone / Clinging to the light like a dog to the bone,” she sings. As fragile as her heart might be, her voice is stronger than ever.
“Alonesome” is the title song to her new album.
