Taste Test: The Bergamot crush mental anguish with ‘Bones’

The dream-pop band raise awareness for suicide prevention with their new song and video.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

You can’t possibly understand the kind of slimy, suffocating darkness that leads to suicide (or an attempt) unless you’ve felt its grasp around your brain. The sensation of life bleeding out of your lungs is difficult to define. Resident dream-pop band The Bergamot impresses the importance of unpacking emotional burdens into a net of support ⏤ yet bandmate Nathaniel Paul never hops onto his soap box. “Bones,” accompanied with an astonishingly beautiful, somehow splendid visual, emphasizes the perception of drowning through not only literal imagery onscreen, but the gurgling synths mimic the slow descent into madness. The outward emotional ripples can then be felt for years to come, and the performance rings as both timeless and untethered by time and place. It just is. “It’s hard to carry a burden / If you don’t have any bones,” the duo sing, calling upon the very first conversation Paul had with his brother (who once attempted suicide and went through rehab treatment). “Bones” is rendered with true heart, and we should all be paying close attention.
