We know love evokes the best of a person. But the worst is what you have to watch out for. Bluesy singer-songwriter Marlene Oak finds herself marred firmly in the latter, tearing through her heart’s cracking strings and lingering flutter. With “Black Roses,” a piano-hooked guitar scorcher, Oak wades through murky waters as she fights valiantly to find herself once more before it’s too late. “Baby, I’ve been holding on / My heart can’t take this no more,” she moans in haunting gusts. Even as it all vanishes from her fingertips, she remains gasping for redemption.
“Black Roses” samples Oak’s new album, Northern Winds, out everywhere April 10.
