It’s OK to feel whatever you feel. Indie-pop guitar-slinger Matt Carstens vents over a former relationship and their “unfortunate taste in men,” as he puts it. “Why Him” is a slow-rolling grinder, a punkish, groovy guitar line to shock the system, and his voice lugs it along with a lemon-squeezed twist. “Kiss me right before you pull the trigger,” he crows. The avalanche of emotion rushes the skin, flooding into the eardrums, and its universal appeal, switching from boiling anger to bitterness, is intoxicating.
