Horror-based pop music still feels like unmarked territory. Kim Petras, graveyardguy, LVCRFT, and Melanie Martinez have certainly cornered the market ⏤ but there is still fresh ground to excavate. Newcomer Meg Smith takes a cracked and rusted shovel right to the sub-genre’s face with her hazy new incantation. “Cross My Heart I Hope U Die” flickers along with a deadly chest-pounding grind, an echo of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” haunting the production, and Smith’s angelic voice casts a spell of the darkest magic you’ll ever stumble across. “Boy, ain’t it scary / RIP, you’re dead to me,” she flips her tongue. It’s devilish and absolutely delicious.
