Mike McKenna Jr. immersed himself in history. After reading a 1998 news article documenting one first-responder’s experience on the crash site of Swiss Air Flight 111, he was struck by the similarities to several other global tragedies. The sinking of the Titanic and near-yearly events at Peggy’s Cove also hit a nerve. So, he put pen to paper to write his new song “At the Edge of the World,” in which he examines the events with keen understanding and compassion. “No, it burns so bright / When you’re close to the sun / It melts yours wings / And my words go numb,” he coos over acoustic guitar. “I can’t bear to see / Another wasted life…” Considering the state of the world in 2020, it’s the kind of timely performance that’ll like evoke many tears.
“At the Edge of the World” anchors his forthcoming album of the same name, expected later this year.
