Taste Test: Mister Keith wants to know, ‘Where Do We Go from Here?’
The Brit-pop storyteller considers the weight of his life on a new anthem.

The mind is a wondrous, mysterious lagoon of potential interconnectivity. It’s best sculpted from experiences, both tragic and joyous, and only then can we harvest the memories for what is yet to be revealed. A long-standing treasure on the Brit-pop scene, genre-mixing connoisseur Mister Keith (real name Keith Ayling) nearly crumbles beneath the weight of such searing existentialism on his new single. With “Where Do We Go from Here?,” glued with choirs of claps and ghostly voices, he shifts piles of garbage to rediscover the power of speech and its implications in everyday life. “I’m searching for my purpose / In a circus caravan / Lonely pursuing something no one understands,” he wields his pen as a silver, newly-sharpened sword. Through his hunt for meaning in the greater storybook of humanity, he wrings his hands for the truth of a working musician’s life and the unbearable dichotomy of needing to be heard and wanting to make art for art’s sake. He’s caught in a net, you could say, but this plucky new anthem might free him, once and for all.
