If you’re not careful, life will fling metaphorical mud ‘n bricks straight at your head. They come in different forms, you see; sometimes, it’s the mundanity of barely scraping by that swirls and sloshes upon your head. Other times, you’re too busy correcting past mistakes that today’s existence doesn’t even register. Fine Americana man W.C. Beck juggles such musings with his song “(Holding on) to a Coast,” paired with a visual that lingers on the coastline, waves licking and dabbing in ripples, and his expedition of his personal truths becomes clearer. “I get swallowed by the surf doing hard work on my mind / I’m learning to stand on my own,” he sings. A byproduct of provocative soul-searching, he spins a toe-tapping ditty of warmth and absolution, as he settles on letting the oncoming tides sweep away what remains of who he was. All that’s left is handfuls of pearls, chipped shells and stony sands, and that”ll be quite alright in the end. You’ll see.

“(Holding on) to a Coast” is lifted from his upcoming ninth studio album, First Flight, out this Friday (June 7).
